Meet the Half-Stitched Amish Quilting Club as their lives unfold around an Amish quilt. There’s a young woman yearning for stability, a couple at odds in their marriage, a young widower seeking solace, a rough-and-tough biker doing community service, a preacher’s wife escaping parish problems—and an Amish widow teaching her first quilting class.

The “Half-Stitched” musical is a delightful new journey of self-discovery, healing and renewed wholeness, pulled from Wanda Brunstetter’s latest New York Times bestseller. Your group will find plenty to laugh at as these unlikely, beginning quilters are stitched together like scraps of fabric under the loving guidance of Emma Yoder. And the music? Oh, the music!

Every potter has a list of WHAT they want to make. HOW to make it is often the question. Learn some of the answers from internationally renowned potter Bill van Gilder, former Clay Times Teaching Techniques columnist and creator of Throwing Clay on the DIY Network. During this two day, demonstration-only class, Bill will demonstrate some 50+ making techniques in answer to these ‘how-to’ questions. Short cuts, tips and tool-use at the wheel will be shared through demo after demo. Hand-building functional forms will be the focus during part of the demonstrations as requested, defining projects and techniques for hand-builders. “Throughout 45+ yrs. of making functional pots, I’ve collected hundreds of making techniques used to make specific pots, both wheel-thrown and hand-built,” says Bill. Demonstrated techniques at the wheel will include: Efficient hand positions for throwing Simple tools and their use Lid arrangements and form Spout, rim and lip making and proportions Trimming and foot finishing possibilities Faceting and fluting as decoration Handles and lugs; pulled and hand built Making bottle forms; collaring techniques Making dinnerware; throwing and trimming Making squared and oval baking ware Wet, thick slip decoration And more… A sampling of forms to be demonstrated: Open and lidded casseroles Pitcher and pouring pots Cups and mugs Bowl forms Dinnerware Bottle forms Hand-building demonstrations may include: Slumped oval slab platter making Humped squared plate making Foot attachment possibilities; slab, sprigged & coiled Textured decoration; wet slip, pressed, and resisted textures Participants are welcome to take photos, and are encouraged to bring a notebook. A discussion about glazes will take place during the workshop, as requested. My ^6 oxidation, ^8-9-10 gas, and salt/soda wood-firing slips & glaze recipe sheets will be provided to each participant. A selection of Bill’s potter’s hand-tools (van Gilder Clay Tools), a sampling of his current work, and copies of his DVDs are made available for participant purchase. “I make pottery with the hope and anticipation that the pots will invite use. By using a slow momentum kick wheel and soft clays, I pursue the casual nuance of form and surface I admire so much in some historical pots. I make multiples of similar pots and within each series there is discovery… Would this form be more interesting made larger? What will happen if I add this to the clay body? Will this type of fuel change the surface or color of clay? Curiosity is paramount.”-- Bill van Gilder

Marvelous Marbling on Paper and Silk with Diane Maurer

Pennsylvania Guild of Craftsmen
Date: Saturday September 27, 2014
Time: 10:00 am - 4:00 pm
Category: Educational

Location: Pennsylvania Guild of Craftsmen
Price: Member rate $112; Non-member rate $125
Pale meandering lines and jagged rings of color are the hallmark of Japanese Suminagashi marbling. A favorite of paper decorators for over 800 years, this is an easy, almost meditative type of marbling. In this class you’ll learn to float dyes on water, fan, blow or tease them into designs and apply a sheet of absorbent paper to make a contact print. We’ll concentrate on eastern techniques and add some western take-offs like multiple-image work and kitty-whisker prints to spice things up..
We’ll begin this class by exploring Suminagashi marbling on paper and then apply the techniques to marble silk. You’ll leave class with beautiful papers, a silk scarf and a new technique to use for quilting, bookbinding or making wearable art.
Materials Fee: $12 payable to the instructor at the time of the class covers paper, dyes, surfactant, silk and paper towels.
Diane Maurer-Mathison’s decorative papers have been shown in galleries and museums throughout the world. Numerous design commissions include work for Lenox China, Harper Collins Publishers and Godiva Chocolates. She is the author of thirteen books on paper art and has demonstrated marbling and paste paper design on several television shows. In addition to writing, teaching workshops and selling marbling supplies, Diane produces collages, handbound books and wearable art for fine crafts galleries.

How To Photograph Your Artwork with John Benigno

Pennsylvania Guild of Craftsmen
Date: Saturday September 27, 2014
Time: 10:00 am - 2:30 pm
Category: Arts / Exhibits

Location: Pennsylvania Guild of Craftsmen
Price: Member rate $67; Non-member rate $75
Stop paying other people for something that you can do yourself. This workshop is divided into two parts. First, you will learn how to photograph your artwork – both two and three dimensional work. We will cover using inexpensive lighting equipment, including umbrellas, and a tripod, which lenses are best for copy work, how to maximize lens sharpness, how to square your artwork with your camera, shooting through glass, using a light box, and minimizing glare and reflections. The second half will concentrate on setting up a digital workflow, different types of digital files (RAW, TIF, JPEG), non-destructive Photoshop techniques to improve your files – layers, straightening, cropping, improving contrast, spotting, color correction, and sharpening files, etc.
Among other venues, John’s work has been exhibited at the Philadelphia Museum of Art Sales and Rental Gallery, the Magidson Gallery in New York City, the Washington County Arts Council Gallery in Hagerstown, MD, the Keystone Gallery in Lancaster, the Lancaster Art Museum, and the Print Center in Philadelphia. It has been collected by the Berman Museum, the Woodmere Museum, the Art Gallery of Nova Scotia, the Lancaster Museum, The Noyes Museum, the Harry Ransom Center, and the State Museum of Pennsylvania. My photographs have been published in “Camera Arts,” “The Calumet Newsletter for Photographic Artists,” and the “Antietam Review.”
His photographs have been accepted into juried exhibits at the Berman Museum, Woodmere Museum, the University of Delaware, the Chatauqua Art Association, Villanova University, the Art Association of Harrisburg, and the Center for the Arts in Southern New Jersey, to name a few. And, “Chappy Cabanas and Edgartown Light” was on loan to the American Embassy in Kuwait, as part of the State Department’s Art in Embassies program.

Friday: 6-8 pm Saturday and Sunday: 9 am-4 pm
